Course Overview

The Cosmetology program trains persons to be beauty operators, hairstylists, beauticians, and cosmetologists. Some related occupations include makeup artists, nail technicians, styling/cosmetic supply sales, shop owner, beauty consultant, and instructor. Local career opportunities exist in all NPC district communities, but local areas may not be able to absorb all graduates. Some graduates may wish to seek positions in metropolitan or other areas.

SPECIAL NOTE:

The Core Cosmetology Training program is a one-academic-year, intensive program designed to meet cosmetologist licensing requirements for the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology.

The high school program is also offered to qualified students who want to graduate from high school and Cosmetology school in two years.  The NAVIT program consists of twelve credits a semester.  The student attends Cosmetology for three hours either eight a.m. to eleven a.m. or one p.m. to four p.m. Monday through Friday and some Saturdays.   The program begins on approximately August 1st and ends in mid-June the following year. Classes meet approximately 8 hours a day, five days a week for 10 1/2 months, or for 3 hours a day, five days a week for two years so that the 1600 hours of training necessary to qualify for the state exam can be obtained.

People should note that the AAS Degree in Cosmetology is a two-year curriculum. During such a waiting year, students should be taking general education courses and/or brushing up on reading, writing, and math skills so they may be more strongly competitive in the admissions process, as well as more competitive in the job market upon program completion.

Students desiring hours for instructor or manicuring licensing may be admitted only on a space-available basis during the year.  Those desiring instructor certificates must have a current Arizona cosmetology license and at least one year of experience.
