SYLLABUS

I.            COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

An introduction to major theories and research findings of social psychology, with emphasis on the individual and reciprocal interaction with group;  to provide an understanding of the roles of cognitive and motivational processes in social behavior.  Areas covered include such concepts as aggression, attraction, attribution, conformity, groups, helping, persuasion, language, and communication.

 

II.         TEXT:

 

"Social Psychology, Unraveling the Mystery", Kenrick, Neuberg, & Cialdini.

 

III.            LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

 

  A.      The student will read the chapters corresponding to the lecture and discussion.

 

  B.       The student will complete each test.

 

  C.      The student will either do a 6-10 paged               research paper, typed, and double-spaced or                five experiments,  1-3 pages each.

 

IV.            EVALUATION:

 

Students will be awarded points based on:

 

  A.      Test results.

 

  B.            Research paper or 5 experiments.

 

V.            GRADING SCHEME:

 

100 - 90% = A

 89  - 80% = B

 79  - 70% = C

 69  - 60% = D

 

VI.            ATTENDANCE:

 

Attendance will be taken.

 

RESEARCH PAPER

 

Length: 6-10 pages (text), typed, double-spaced.  *** Print should be no larger than 12 pt.  A minimum of five references.

 

Style:    A.P.A., M.L.A. or alternative style agreed upon               with instructor.

 

Topic:   Student's choice with prior approval of                instructor.

 

Date due: Four weeks prior to the end of the                  semester.

 

 

EXPERIMENTS

 

Length: 2-3 pages each, typed, double-spaced.

 

Amount:            5 experiments.

 

Topic:  The 5 listed in the packet or any other  with                 prior approval.

 

Process:            Follow the outline for experimental    design.

 

Date due:            Four weeks prior to the end of the semester.
