BUSINESS 128 SPREADSHEET APPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESS
COURSE SYLLABUS FOR 2003 VERSION to INTERNET
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will learn how to design and use electronic spreadsheets for use in business analysis, forecasting, accounting, and presentations. Using Microsoft EXCEL 2003, students will be able to create worksheets with embedded charts, perform what to if analysis, link worksheets with Word documents, create templates and web pages, and use visual basic, hyperlinks, pivot tables, and data maps.
PREREQUISITES:
AIS 100 Keyboarding or ability to type and CIS 100 Intro to Computer Science or CIS 106 Computer Literacy or Instructor’s permission.
REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS:
MICROSOFT EXCEL 2003, Benchmark Series, Specialist/Expert, Rutkosky & Flynn, EMC Paradigm, 2004, ISBN: 0-7638-2049-0 Student template containing textbook files on CD is included with text. This book does NOT include 2003 software. NPC WILL NOT BE SELLING THIS TEXT but will have a list of vendors. Be sure to allow enough time to order this text if you are going to do EXCEL 2003. If you have EXCEL 2007 software, please go back and click on the syllabus for BUS 128 2007
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
· Create a worksheet and embedded chart in order to analyze numerical information.
· Enter text, numbers, and formulas (functions) into the worksheet.
· Format, link, and use on to line help.
· Create a template, format a template, and create a Web Page.
· Use what to if analysis, data tables, visual basic.
· Use hyperlinks and scenario manager.
· Sort and filter a worksheet database in order to analyze the data in various arrangements.
· Create data map and pivot tables.
· Enhance worksheets using various formatting options.
· Embedding an Excel Worksheet in to a Word Document.
· Organize and analyze data.
· Apply advanced formatting features
· Collaborate by sharing workbooks.

STUDENT CONDUCT AND ATTENDANCE:
All students are responsible for knowing and understanding the Northland Pioneer College Student Conduct Code. The code is in the Student Guide, available from any campus or center office. Any violation of the conduct code, academic or otherwise, will be reported to the appropriate vice president for investigation and decision.
Upon entering Northland Pioneer College, a student assumes the responsibility of completing each course for which he/she is registered. The student is expected to attend all sessions of the classes in which he/she are enrolled. Students should review attendance policies as stated in the Northland Pioneer College Student Guide under “Student Rights and Responsibilities.”
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
This is a “hands on” course with emphasis on applications and simulations. You will be required to complete assignments and projects but there are no written tests. You will do the work in MS EXCEL 2003 and then send it to me as an email attachment in WEBCT. (You will receive WebCt ID and Password as soon as I receive your registration.) I will grade your work and let you know how you did on each exercise. Record your scores as I send give them to you on the following point sheet. You are allowed to redo any assignments where you had problems and resubmit them to me. Do not get behind on your work!
· Read through each chapter paying attention to the Performance Objectives listed at the beginning, the Hints and Quick Steps along the margins, and looking at each of the Figures. At the end of the each chapter read through the Chapter Summary and Features Summary, which recap what you have learned in the chapter.
· Exercises: Complete each and attach to emails to me. 1 pt. each.
· Concepts Check: Just send me the answers to these in email attachment. 1 pt. each.
· Assessments: Complete and send to me as attachments 5 pts. each
· Work In Progress Assessments: Complete and send to me as attachments to emails 10 pts. each.
· Chapter Challenge at the end of the chapters is not assigned, but you may complete them if you wish more reinforcement of the concepts learned in the chapter. (These are not graded or part of the total score for the course).
· In order to “pass” this class with a C, you will need to have enough points as listed below for a C. Incompletes “I” grades will only be given under very special circumstances and only if you are 85 percent through the course as listed in the NPC Catalog.
EVALUATION METHOD:
Exercises 183 pts. Concepts Checks 234 pts.
Assessments (5 pts. each) and
Work in Progress Assessing Proficiency (10 pts. each) 925 pts.
Total points 1342 pts.
GRADING SCALE:
A = 1209 to 1342 pts.
B = 1075 to 1208
C = 941 to 1074
D = 806 to 940
F = 805 and below
SENDING ME WORK:
After completing and saving your work, you will email and attach me and your work. Make sure you have labeled all work correctly by Chapter, assessment number; you can answer the questions by sending these in an email to me—answers only!

Read the back cover of your textbook on Using the CD ROM which came with your text. This contains the student data files you will need throughout the book and explains how to move these files on your C:, or USB drives. |
