BUSINESS 128 SPREADSHEET APPLICATIONS FOR BUSINESS
COURSE SYLLABUS FOR EXCEL 2007 VERSION
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will learn how to design and use electronic spreadsheets for use in business analysis, forecasting, accounting, and presentations. Using Microsoft EXCEL 2007, students will be able to create worksheets with embedded charts, perform what-if analysis, link worksheets with Word documents, create templates and web pages, and use visual basic, hyperlinks, pivot tables, and data maps.
PREREQUISITES:
AIS 100 Keyboarding or ability to type, and CIS 100 Intro to Computer Science or CIS 106 Computer Literacy or Instructor’s permission.
REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS:
TITLE:
MS Excel 2007 Specialist
and Expert Benchmark Series, AUTHOR: Rutkosky,
TEXT ISBN: 978-076383007-6.
Textbooks do not include EXCEL 2007 software. Student template containing
textbook files on CD is included with text.
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
Create a worksheet and embedded chart in order to analyze numerical information.
Enter text, numbers, and formulas (functions) into the worksheet.
Format, link, and use on-line help.
Create a template, format a template, and create a Web Page.
Use what-if analysis, data tables, visual basic.
Use hyperlinks and scenario manager.
Sort and filter a worksheet database in order to analyze the data in various arrangements.
Create data map and pivot tables.
Enhance worksheets using various formatting options.
Embedding an Excel Worksheet into a Word Document.
Organize and analyze data.
Collaborate by sharing workbooks.
Apply advanced formatting features.

ATTENDANCE:
The NPC catalog states, “Upon entering Northland Pioneer College, a student assumes the responsibility of completing each course for which s/he is registered. The student is expected to attend all sessions of the classes in which s/he is enrolled. Any student who has three (3) absences without excuses acceptable to the instructor, medical or otherwise, may be dropped from the class. Students who miss the first two (2) meetings of the class may also be dropped. After a student has been dropped from the class for unexcused absences, an appeal for reinstatement will be considered only under extenuating circumstances.” (NPC Catalog.)
This course follows the NPC semester schedule.
You are expected to stay on schedule by following the course schedule in this course syllabus.
Attendance is based on regular communication with me seittreim@npc.edu. at least once a week.
You will be dropped from the course if I do not hear from you for 1 week.
You are not penalized for completing courses early. However, you may be penalized for turning work in late
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
This is a “hands-on” course with emphasis on applications and simulations. You will complete the work in MS EXCEL 2007 and then send it to me as an email attachment. I will grade your work and record them on a point sheet, which I will attach to you. If you send me work and do not hear from me within at least a week, you need to email me again. All work is scored and you will always receive a grade point sheet. You are allowed to redo any assignments where you had problems and resubmit them to me. Do not get behind on your work!
Read through each chapter paying attention to the Performance Objectives listed at the beginning, the Hints and Quick Steps along the margins, and looking at each of the Figures. At the end of the each chapter read through the Chapter Summary and Features Summary, which recap what you have learned in the chapter.
Projects: Complete each (a through last letter in each project) and attach to emails. 1 pt. each.
Concepts Check: Just send me the answers to these in email. 1 pt. each.
Skill Check Assessments: Complete without any assistance. These are “tests.” Send to me as attachments to emails. 5 pts. each
Assessing Proficiency: Complete all of these without any assistance, and send to me as attachments to emails. 15 pts. each.
In order to “pass” this class with a C, you will need to have enough points as listed below for a C. Incompletes “I” grades will only be given under very special circumstances and only if you are 85 percent through the course as listed in the NPC Catalog.
EVALUATION METHOD:
The grade you earn is based on the total number of points you have on the last day of class using the grading scale below.

Skill Check Assessments 5 pts. each
Assessing Proficiency Unit Tests 15 pts. each
A = 1064-1182 pts.
B = 946 -1063
C = 827-945
D = 709-826
F = 708 and below
