CIS 230 INTRO TO MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007 (Windows XP)—3 credit hours

COURSE SYLLABUS

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

As a student in this course, you will learn the most important topics of Microsoft Office 2007.  No prior computer experience is assumed.  You will learn the Office 2007software programs: Word 2007 Excel 2007, Access 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Outlook 2007.  You will also learn how to integrate these applications.

 

PREREQUISITES: 

 

None.

You must have MS Office 2007 (including Access) or access to it in order to take this course.  MS Works will not work for this class.

 

TEXT AND OTHER MATERIALS:

 

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007, MARQUEE SERIES with Windows XP and Internet Explorer 7.0, Rutkosky, EMC Paradigm.    (Textbook includes CD containing student data files.)

 

Flash drive (jump drive/USB drive) if you will be using the NPC labs to work on this course.  Internet students:  You do not need these if you are saving your work on your own computer.

 

Do not open your textbooks until you check with your instructor, make sure you have the correct text and are in the right class.  The bookstore will not give refunds on textbooks with broken seals. 

 

Do you have  Windows Vista?   If you do, then ask your instructor for the course syllabus that will direct you to the correct MS OFFICE 2007 For Vista Windows textbook, and assignments for that version.

 

*System Requirements: MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007

·         Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows Vista

·         500 MHz processor or higher; 256 MB RAM or higher

·         DVD drive

·         2 GB of available hard-disk space

·         800 x 600 minimum monitor resolution; 1024 x 768 recommended

·         Computer mouse, or compatible pointing device

 

STUDENT CONDUCT and ATTENDANCE:

 

All students are responsible for knowing and understanding the Northland Pioneer College Student Conduct Code.  The code is in the Student Guide, available from any campus or center office.  Any violation of the conduct code, academic or otherwise, will be reported to the appropriate vice president for investigation and decision.

 

Upon entering Northland Pioneer College, a student assumes the responsibility of completing each course for which he/she is registered. COURSE COMPETENCIES/OUTCOMES:

 

·        Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate school, work, or home situations and apply MS Office technology to complete information-processing tasks efficiently and effectively.

 

·         Use and customize the capabilities of the operating system utilities to solve problems.

 

·         Access the Internet and learn to use the browse, search, and hyperlink capabilities of Web browsers.

 

·       Create, design, and produce professional documents using word processing software (Word).  Functions include:  design options for formatting and layout, strategies for working with multiple documents, techniques for using templates and pre-designed styles, and procedures for creating tables. 

 

·     Process, manipulate and represent numeric data using spreadsheet software (Excel).  Functions include:  techniques for preparing and formatting an Excel Worksheet, including Styles and Format Painter, creating formulas, using multiple worksheets, exploring what-if scenarios, and converting data into chart formats.

 

·       Design and create information and motivational slides using presentation software (PowerPoint) and images that contain hyperlinks, tables, clip art and animation.

 

·         Use WordArt to create organizational charts and draw and format objects in Word and Excel.

 

·         Learn strategies for merging and integrating source data from different MS Office applications, using the commands for object linking and       embedding.

 

·         Plan, structure, and create databases for efficient data access and retrieval using database software (Access).  Functions include:  search and sort capabilities for extracting data, data retrieval commands, techniques for record specification and design options for report layout.

 

 

GETTING STARTED:

 

·         Read this course syllabus thoroughly!  This guide will explain everything you need to know for successful completion of this course.  You will need to bring it with you for each class session.  Follow the course schedule/personal progress record (in this guide) carefully noting due dates and assignments.  Do only assignments listed. Your instructor will record your scores as you proceed through the course. 

 

·         Turn to the Course Schedule in this course syllabus to start on Week 1 Assignments.   As you proceed through each chapter, you will read all chapter material completing the exercises and activities as presented. 

 

·         Label your work:  Chapter  and assignments  before attaching them to email to instructor. 

 

·         Internet students:  Save assignments as you complete them. You do not have to print anything out. You will attach these to an email to instructor.  The first part of the textbook (Windows, Internet Explorer) is mostly browsing, opening, moving, copying and other  activities on the  applications.  Some of these you will not be able to "save"  and send  as an attachment.  Just send an email telling the instructor what assessments you  completed.   You can type the answers only to the Knowledge Checks and send  in an email. Starting with  WORD  Skills Review and Skills Assessments, you will save these and attach them to an email and send to instructor.

 

     You will not be using WEBCT or BLACKBOARD so will not need a password.

GRADING PROCEDURE:

 

The instructor is responsible for assigning grades. Grades are based on academic performance, class participation and attendance. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Faculty may lower a grade based on academic dishonesty or other forms of student misconduct. Academic dishonesty or other forms of student misconduct may also be referred to the Vice President for Student Services for further action. Grade changes can be made only by the instructor with approval of the Dean/Division Director and/or the Vice President for Learning. Students who disagree with a grade may file a grievance as outlined in the Policy & Procedures Manual of Northland Pioneer College (Source: Northland Pioneer College Catalog). 

 

Students should review grading policies as stated in the Northland Pioneer College Catalog, or on the NPC web page, or in the Student Guide.

 

Only under instructor approval will late assignments and/or exams be accepted during the last two weeks of classes.

 

EVALUATION:

  

Label all of your work at the bottom of the document with your name, date, week and assignment. Points will be deducted for errors in spelling, format, and incorrect answers. 

 

You will not be penalized for finishing ahead of schedule, but you could lose points for turning in assignments late.  Your instructor will drop you if you do not attend class or contact instructor for 3 weeks.

 

    Knowledge Check:   Answer these either on a sheet of paper or in your textbook.  Your instructor will go over these with you.  These are worth 1 point each (276 total points).  Internet Students:  Email only the answers to these either in an email or Word document attached to your email.  Your instructor will grade these and  will  send you your score.

 

    Skills Review:  These are to be completed WITHOUT any assistance!  They are worth 5 points each. (260 total points.)  Internet Students:  attach these to emails to send to your instructor. 

 

    Skill Assessment: These are to be completed WITHOUT any assistance.    These are worth 10 points each. (860 total points.)  Internet Students: attach these to emails to send to your instructor.  Your instructor will grade these and send you your score.

 

     Integrating Programs:  include numerous integration activities using Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. These demonstrate how documents can be created in one application and then shared with another.  These are worth 10 points each (110  points.)  Internet Students:  attach these to emails to send to your instructor.  Your instructor will grade these and send you your score.

 Your final grade will be based on the total points you have on the final day of class using the  following course  grading scale.
