COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This advanced course covers features of MS Office Suite 2003.  Programs include:  MS Word 2003, Excel 2003, Access 2003,  and PowerPoint 2003.   Students will apply problem-solving techniques to complete professional looking documents and projects.  Students successfully completing this and Introduction to MS Office will be prepared to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification exams.  

 

PREREQUISITES: 

 

CIS 230 Introduction to MS Office 2003.  This course begins with many advanced features.  A good knowledge of basics is required.

 

TEXT AND OTHER MATERIALS:  

 

Because NPC is updating to MS OFFICE 2007, the 2003 books will not be available at the NPC bookstore.  You will need to order them from another vendor.  (List on NPC Bookstore website.)  T

If you wish to update to MS Office 2007, NPC is selling the MS OFFICE 2007 CIS 235 books which come with a  free 180-day trial MS OFFICE 2007 software (after 180 days, student may purchase permanently for $59).  ONLY AVAILABLE AT NPC!  For more information on the books, go back and click on MS OFFICE 2007 VISTA or MS OFFICE WINDOWS XP  (depending on what Windows version you have).  Make sure your computer will handle MS OFFICE 2007 before opting this.

 

 

 

ATTENDANCE:

 

Upon entering Northland Pioneer College, students assume the responsibility of completing each course for which they are registered.  Students are expected to attend all sessions of the classes in which they are enrolled.  Any student who has three (3) absences without communication with the  instructor, will be dropped from the class.  Students who miss the first two (2) meetings of the class may also be dropped.  It is the student's responsibility to communicate with the instructor.

 

At most campuses/centers, open labs are available for students (a schedule is available within the first two weeks). This course will require 6-12  hours per week additional computer time outside of class for successful completion of assignments.  All students must follow college/lab electronic usage policies and student conduct code.

 

You are not penalized for completing this course early.  However, you may be penalized for turning work in late.

Use advanced features (graphics, merging, templates, hyperlinks, tables, formatting, and columns) of MS Word 2003 to prepare various professional documents.

Create a Web page with graphics, buttons, and hyperlinks using MS Word 2003.

Use MS Excel 2003 to create various business documents using advanced features (calculations, functions, assumptions, and goal seeking)..

Use MS Access 2003 to develop databases.

Utilize advanced features of MS PowerPoint 2003.

bullet

Integrate MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint to create professional business documents.

GETTING STARTED:

Do not open your textbooks until you make sure you have correct text and are in right class.  The bookstore will not give refunds on textbooks with broken seals.

Read this course syllabus thoroughly!  This guide will explain everything you need to know for successful completion of this course.  You will need to bring it with you for each class session.  Follow the course schedule carefully noting due dates and assignments.  Do only assignments listed. You will record your scores on the point sheet attached as I send you your scores.

Complete all course requirements. (See below.)

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

This is a “hands-on” course with emphasis on applications and simulations. You will be required to complete assignments and projects but there are no written tests. 

bullet

Sending me your work:  You will complete the assignments in the appropriate programs and then attach to me in emails to me through WEBCT (I will help you get set up in this "virtual classroom."

You are allowed to redo and resubmit any assignments where you had problems and resubmit them.  Do not get behind on your work!  There is a lot of work to do in this class.

Read through each chapter assigned paying attention to the Performance Objectives listed at the beginning,  the Hints and Quick Steps along the margins, and looking at each of the Figures.  At the end of the each chapter  read through the Chapter Summary and Features Summary,  which recap what you have learned in the chapter.

Concepts Check:  1 pt. each.

Assessments:  5 pts. each

Work In Progress  and Workplace Ready Assessments:  10 pts. each.

Chapter Challenge at the end of the chapters is not assigned, but you may complete them if you wish more reinforcement of the concepts learned in the chapter.  (These are not graded or part of the total score for the course).

In order to “pass” this class with a C, you will need to have enough points as listed below for a C.  Incompletes “I” grades will only be given under very special circumstances and only if you are 85 percent through the course as listed in the NPC Catalog.
