WORD XP, WORD 2003, OR WORD 2007 (NOT INCLUDED) INSTALLED ON YOUR
COMPUTER ALONG WITH THE TYPING PROGRAM (INCLUDED WITH YOUR TEXT).
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Develop
speed and accuracy. Prepare business correspondence, manuscripts with footnotes,
technical and statistical reports, business forms and tables from arranged and
unarranged copy.
PREREQUISITES:
AIS 110 Basic Keyboarding and Formatting.
TEXT
AND OTHER MATERIALS:
Glencoe
Microsoft Word software. If you do not have this software on your computer, please let your instructor know.
Do not open your textbooks until you check with your instructor, make sure you have the correct text and are in the right class. The bookstore will not give refunds on textbooks with broken seals.
Be sure to contact your instructor before opening your textbooks. They will not be exchanged for different ones if you have opened them.
COURSE COMPETANCIES:
You
will be able to key a minimum of 48 GWAM on a five-minute timed writing
with no more than 5 errors.
Compose
coherent text with correct word usage at the paragraph and document levels
with 70% accuracy.
Proofread
basic text, find errors, and correct with 100% accuracy and demonstrate a
knowledge of proofreading symbols with 90% accuracy.
Demonstrate production-level mastery on documents contained in Part Tests 4, 5, and 6 with a grade of C (70%) or better.
Meet a 70% completion rate of all assigned daily work to the instructor’s satisfaction or as student has contracted with the instructor.
All
students are responsible for knowing and understanding the Student Conduct Code.
The Code is in the Student Guide, available from any campus or center office.
Any violation of the Conduct Code, academic or otherwise, will be reported to
the appropriate Vice President for investigation and decision.

instructor is responsible for assigning grades. Grades are based on academic
performance, class participation and attendance. Academic dishonesty will not be
tolerated. Faculty may lower a grade based on academic dishonesty or other forms
of student misconduct. Academic dishonesty or other forms of student misconduct
may also be referred to the Vice President for Student Services for further
action. Grade changes can be made only by the instructor with approval of the
Dean/Division Director and/or the Vice President for Learning. Students who
disagree with a grade may file a grievance as outlined in the Policy &
Procedures Manual of
Students
should review grading policies as stated in the Northland Pioneer College
Catalog, or on the NPC web page, or in the Student Guide.
Only under instructor approval will late assignments and/or exams be accepted during the last two weeks of classes.
PLACEMENT:
Your
instructor may wish to visit with you to determine whether or not you have
sufficient keyboarding/ word processing background for you to be successful in
this course. If you are unsure of
your ability, please ask for guidance.
GETTING
STARTED:
After
contacting your instructor, open your text and check to be sure it is packed
with the two spiral-bound texts needed.
Scan
through the material on “Before You Begin” and “About Your Book” and the “Reference Manual.” You don’t have
to read every word, but it will be helpful to know the information is there
should you need it.
Learn
how to access your software program at this time. Instructions are contained
later on in this guide.
Do
all lesson exercises unless your instructor tells you otherwise.
REMEMBER that you will be using both the software and your textbook.
When you have finished the lesson, upload the exercises listed in your
course schedule at the back of this student guide.
DAILY
ROUTINE:
Read
through this guide in its entirety. It contains information that will be
used throughout the entire course.
Read
ALL instructions contained in the software. Do ALL drills and read all
information contained in the text. The timed writings and production
exercises will save automatically as you complete them.
Use
the reference section of your text and/or the lesson helps when you have
formatting questions.
Be
sure to ask your instructor for help at any time you feel you have any
unanswered questions about your work.
When
you have finished every 2-3 lessons, upload them to your instructor for
review and feedback. Instructions are given later in this guide.
If
you are saving to a floppy disk, when you have completed 20 lessons ask your
instructor for directions to delete files or your disk my fill up.
Files must be deleted regularly so that they will not be lost due to full
disks. We recommend you delete files after receiving the instructor's
approval of your previous ten lessons.
INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE:
System
requirements and installation instructions are given in your typing kit in the
small black booklet.
USING
THE SOFTWARE:
Double-click
on the GDP Distance Learning icon on your desktop, or move the mouse arrow
to the Start
button at the bottom left of the screen. Click the left mouse button
once. Move the mouse arrow up to and highlight Programs,
move right to the next column to Irwin
Keyboarding. Again move right once more to GDP
Home and left click.
Click on “new student” the first time. A screen asking for identification should appear. Fill in your name and other information asked for. Use the tab key to move the blinking cursor to highlight the line you wish to type on. When you finish an entry, press the TAB key again, and the cursor or highlighted area will move to the next line. Key in the next information asked for. Be sure to key in your e-mail information. Be careful of spacing and be certain to include the .com at the end of the address. If you do not enter your email address in correctly on your disk, then you will not be able to upload your assignments.
The
screen will move to a tutorial which will give you instructions on how to
proceed through the software program. Follow the instructions on
screen.
Click
continue to start
the tutorial; click the right
arrow at the bottom of the screen to continue on with the tutorial.
You will go through this only once, and when you are finished, click the Exit
button at the bottom of the screen. NOTE:
You will be using the Portfolio
and Reference Manual
buttons as you go through the course. If you are enrolled for an
internet course, follow your instructor’s directions.
Check
the assignments in the “Course Schedule” section of this student guide.
Read the instructions the software gives and in the left margin of your text
carefully and follow them.
Do all sections unless your instructor tells you otherwise. When you have finished a lesson, click on the next lesson number or EXIT the program (File, Exit GDP, Yes).

Testing:
Each production problem on Part Tests 4, 5, and 6 will be graded separately and then averaged together with all problems for a total score. That average should be averaged with the timed writing score for a total test score. Production problems are graded on speed, errors, and format.
