Some Definitions
-
Learning Community is a group
(cohort) of students working toward a common goal. A learning community
supports and teaches itself, realizing that not all
learning comes from the college faculty. Building professional relationships,
supporting each other and sharing experiences gives members of a
learning community the encouragement and resources to be successful.
- Constructivist philosophy of education is the
belief that learning takes place when the student "constructs meaning" from
the material being taught. This is accomplished by the student taking an
active role in his/her education, deciding how the new information presented
is meaningful, and in what ways it relates to prior knowledge.
- Observation / Internship is a "service
learning" opportunity where the pre-service teacher is exposed to a classroom
setting where she/he can see how the content of a college class applies to the
K-8 classroom and "real" students.
- Mentor Teacher is a practicing teacher who
works with a pre-service teacher, sharing information, discussing techniques,
reviewing lesson plans, teaching and encouraging the student.
